Thoughts from Today

  • A 290-piece marching band plus 250 band alumni playing Malaguena can give you goose bumps even when sitting outside in the September sunshine.
  • Seeing my 2-year-old boy pump his fist and chant "Go Big Red" along with the crowd is pretty damned cute.
  • Although I'm grateful the kids and I can go watch the band rehearse in the stadium on game days, I still really, really want the experience of going to a game before we leave Lincoln. Football games in Lincoln are truly special events.
  • Upon spotting some stray Western Kentucky fans while driving in downtown Lincoln today......Me: "Western Kentucky fans?? Really?" Laura, apparently directed at said WKU fans, in a scolding tone: "Come on! We're in Nebraska! Cheer for Nebraska!"
  • Although last fall pretty much molded me into a bona fide college football fan, I know that when NFL games come on TV on Sunday, I will still recoil at the idea of watching them.
  • Seeing the Reds poised for their first post-season play since I was a college student rocks.
  • Watching Laura figure out math in her head playing a ten frame game online is really, really cool. I can't wait to see how much stuff this girl knows by the end of kindergarten.
  • Nebraska may have some of the most infectious fight songs anywhere. Every time I go to a band event, I end up with "Hail Varsity" or "There's No Place Like Nebraska" stuck in my head all day.
  • Laura, after being stripped down to her underwear for a heavy duty finger painting session and while listening to the Husker game on the radio: "Mom, now I'm almost a twirler." Me: "What?" Her: "My underwear is almost like a twirler outfit."
  • It has dawned on me how much manners are sinking in with Nathan. Just today, I heard a "May I be excused?" from him after dinner, and upon asking for help with something while I was still eating dessert he said, "Oh, Mom, you can finish your ice cream first." Love him!!!
  • Allergies suck!! I have lived with them my whole life, but they can still kick my a$%, especially when I try to go out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather.
  • My kids are pretty damned cool people to spend a Saturday with!
