Recital, Camping and Hiking

Wow, time does fly when you're having fun!  It's going to take me a few posts to catch up this time!  My last post was right after school let out for Laura.  We have been very busy (but in a fun, good, summertime way) ever since then.  The weekend right after school let out, Laura had her final dance recital for the year.  The theme was music from movies, and Laura's class did a beautiful little dance to music from Alice in Wonderland.  They were flowers, and their dance began with them down on the floor like seeds that then grew into beautiful flowers.  All of the girls did so well, and it was great to see their progress since the Nutcracker.  We got an extra surprise when Laura won the Most Improved Award for Ballet I.  Way to go, Laura!

Laura loved her ballet teacher, Miss Elena!

Over Memorial Day weekend, we went on our first family camping trip since moving here.  We camped at Unicoi State Park just outside of Helen, GA.  Both Unicoi and Helen are beautiful with so much to do; we will definitely be going back again!!  On our first morning, a deer ran right through our campsite (just a few feet from our tent) while we ate breakfast.  So cool to see!

Friday night, the rangers held a campfire with s'mores and stories.  So fun!

On Saturday, Cliff's parents joined us for a day in Helen that included lunch at a café on the Chattahoochee River, mini golf and ice cream.

Waking up in a silly mood Sunday morning in the tent.

On Sunday, we hiked to beautiful Anna Ruby Falls, a gorgeous double waterfall just outside the state park.

A post-hike treat was in order.  Yum!
The boys did a second hike to Duke's Falls while Laura and I took a break.
Finishing dinner at the campsite.
Sunday also included canoeing on the lake, a highlight of the trip for me, for sure.  I wish I could share pictures, but since I didn't know how steady the kids would keep the canoe, I didn't want to risk the camera going for a swim. :)

On Monday morning, we borrowed some poles and a tackle box and let the kids take a crack at fishing.  They didn't catch anything, and Laura admitted it was "a lot harder" than she thought, but they sure had fun.
Dad teaches Nathan how to hold the pole.
Laura definitely got the hang of casting her line!

The following weekend, we headed up to NC to visit Cliff's parents.  We enjoyed dinner out for his mom's birthday, playing at the park, mini golf, and more.  We also enjoyed just getting to relax.  On Sunday, we took the hike to the top of Big Glassy Mountain.  It was about 1.3 miles to the top, but pretty steep.  We were proud of the kids for hanging in there!

The view from the summit.  So pretty!
"We did it!  We climbed a mountain!"

We are having lots of fun at home these days too, but that's for another post.  Until then.........
