We've been back from vacation for a week and a half now, so I guess it is about time for me to share some pictures. We left home on Thursday, July 5 to head to Charleston. After a rocky start to our trip-our tire blew out about 2 1/2 hours into the drive-we arrived safely at the Mt. Pleasant KOA, just north of Charleston. We set up camp and enjoyed a nice dinner and s'mores over the campfire.
| Many thanks to the kind stranger who stopped along the roadside to help Cliff put the spare tire on. He also directed us to a nearby garage. The good people of Williston, SC had us back on the road with a new tire within an hour! |
On Friday, Cliff's parents joined us for one day of sightseeing. We headed downtown and took the ferry out to Fort Sumter, which was a great tour for all of us.
| A view of the fort as we approached on the ferry. |
| A view from inside the fort. |
| The kids loved the canons at Fort Sumter. |
After the fort, we headed to Waterfront Park on the southern part of the Charleston peninsula, right on the harbor. We were pretty hot (and some of us slightly dehydrated), so we took a break to enjoy some Charleston Ice flavored ice treats.
| Cooling off and re-hydrating at Waterfront Park. |
We spent the rest of the afternoon strolling the beautiful downtown streets and browsing in the City Market before ending our busy day with a lovely dinner at Cru Café.
On Saturday, it was just the four of us once again. We got an earlier start to get our sightseeing in before the heat got too bad. We headed to historic Charles Towne Landing, which is a few miles from downtown and the site of the original settlement. There was a ton of stuff to do there, including a museum about the history of the settlement, a small zoo, recreations of portions of the original settlement, and more.
| Trying on clothes like the settlers wore in the museum. |
| The kids loved the pelicans in the aviary portion of the zoo. |
| Caught in the stocks! (at the recreation of the settlement) |
| Look at that serious face! |
| We got to tour a recreation of a boat from the colonial era. |
| The beautiful avenue of oaks on the Charles Towne Landing site. |
After basking in the air conditioning at McDonald's for lunch, we went back to the campground and had a great time playing in the pool and taking a wagon ride around a nearby plantation.
| Fun at the KOA pool! |
On Sunday, we had our "take it easy" day, which by no means meant we did nothing! After breakfast, we headed about 8 miles south of the KOA to the public beach in Isle of Palms, SC to introduce our kids to the beach and the ocean.
| Strong little man lugging his bucket of sand around. |
| Laura and Daddy, just shootin' the breeze and enjoying the waves....... |
| Laura fell in love with the waves pretty quickly! |
After the beach and a quick lunch at camp, we spent the hottest part of the day relaxing in movie theater seats watching Madagascar 3 (I like to move it, move it!). After dinner at camp, we headed next door to Black Beard's Cove, an arcade and fun park. The kids enjoyed the indoor playground, while Cliff and I played some good, old arcade games. We ended the night with all four of us enjoying the go-kart track. What a fun place! Too bad I forgot to take pictures! :(
More vacation fun to come soon........ Stay tuned!
