In honor of this Saturday being the birthday of the late, great Dr. Seuss, we've been having a Seuss-y kind of week in preschool. On Monday, Nathan did school with Daddy and read all of Hop on Pop to him! We are very excited at how Nathan's reading has progressed in the last few months. On Tuesday, we had a "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" day. At home, we read the book, and then we did several fishy activities. Nathan counted 10 Goldfish crackers into each of 10 Dixie cups, then we worked on skip counting by tens all the way to 100. After that, we put some Goldfish in a bowl, and he went "fishing" for them, using a plastic straw as his pole and a dab of whipped cream cheese as his bait. This worked is fine motor skills, and, of course, he got to eat what he caught! :) Then we went to story time at the library, where the theme of the day was, of course, Dr. Seuss. We listened to stories, sang songs, met the Cat in the Hat, watched the Green Eggs and Ham video, then did the "Seussy Pokey".

On Wednesday, we read The Foot Book and talked about all of the opposites in the book (front feet, back feet, high feet, low feet, etc.). Then, we worked on left and right ("Left foot, left foot, left foot, right") by doing the Hokey Pokey (we had to "turn ourselves around" on our bottoms because of Nathan's cast) and then playing Simon Says ("Simon Says put your left thumb on your nose..."). We also learned about measuring by using two cut-out feet (one big, one small) to measure items around the house. Nathan also charted the measurement for each thing.
Today, Nathan had school with Daddy again, and it was Fox in Socks day. They played games with rhyming words, Nathan "sewed a sock" (aka wove a shoelace in and out of holes punched into a cardboard 'sock'), and then Nathan practiced balling up pairs of socks and tossing them across the room into a laundry basket.
Tomorrow, we will cap off the week with "Birthday Day". Since Nathan's birthday is one day after that of Dr. Seuss, we thought this was the perfect wrap-up to the week. We will read "Happy Birthday to You" by Dr. Seuss, look back at Nathan's baby book, and make birthday cupcakes together.
The big "5" is coming up on Sunday. Pictures will be up next week. :)
