Two months after breaking his tibia, and one month after having a full leg cast removed, Nathan finally got out on the soccer field this week. Early Tuesday morning, while grocery shopping, he and I discussed the idea of him playing, even if only for a few minutes to do some kick-offs, in that evening's soccer game. He was not too hip on that idea. But the craziest thing happened when we got home. He started running around the house. Then, when we got to the library for story time, he ran in to the library from the parking lot. Everyone at the library kept commenting on how well he was getting around. It must have gotten to him because all of a sudden, he seemed pretty on board with the idea of playing. He even got out his little rubber soccer ball and started kicking it around the house to, as he put it, "practice for the game."
When we got to the soccer field, Nathan not only played a little; he played a lot! He played the whole first half of the game, sat out the third quarter, then played the whole fourth quarter too. Needless to say, he was pretty exhausted when we got home, but he sure had a hell of a lot of fun!

Ready to PLAY!
He couldn't quite keep up with the other kids, but he ran his heart out, got a few kicks in, and even blocked a goal by the biggest kid on the other team (a kid he referred to as "the big guy").

Run, run, run (FYI: that's "the big guy" on the right)!

Having fun!
It was great to see him on the move once again. Quite honestly, I was afraid we had overdone it and that he would wake up on Wednesday morning stiff, in pain and/or limping. Come Wednesday, however, he was pretty much in the same shape he had been on Tuesday morning. He even got that little, rubber soccer ball out again and started kicking it around the house. I heard him saying to himself, "I've gotta help my team! Defend the goal!" I guess we hadn't overdone it after all! :)
