Nathan has really been progressing quickly with his reading skills these days. We've been working on reading basic, 3-letter words with short vowel sounds (i.e. cat, rug, hit, dog) for a while now, and we've recently started working on a set of basic sight word cards. This is actually Laura's deck of high frequency word flash cards from kindergarten. He has mastered over 25 of the sight words by now, basics like I, you, he, she, can, and, etc. Last week, I made a new set of cards using some of the words he knows. I divided them into pink subject cards, yellow verb cards, and green predicate cards. I also included white cards for the conjunction 'and' and the period. First I built sentences for him to read to me, but very quickly, HE was building sentences for ME to read. His favorite (and mine too) was "I love you Mom."

A few days later, on a car ride back from Macon, he took a stab at his first book, Cats. This series of books is what Laura first learned to read with back in Nebraska. Fortunately, our public library here has them too. He made it through the book with very little help from me and Cliff. He was very proud of himself. That afternoon, we stopped at the library for their weekly "We Read on Wednesday" program where the kids can read to the librarians for prizes. Normally, Nathan has to have them read to him, but this time, for the first time, HE did the reading. Ms. Sue was so excited and pleased by how well he did. The world is really opening up for our little guy now!
