LBJ
Laura had to do a president project (in honor of November being election month) for her OE (gifted) class. Each OE student from grades 1-5 randomly drew the name of one president to research. Laura picked Lyndon B. Johnson. We got a couple of books from the library, and she did her research. Cliff worked with her on the more difficult concepts, and there were plenty of them! Not only did Laura get to learn about how LBJ became president by being the VP when JFK was assassinated, but she was also introduced to such concepts as the Vietnam War (and the civil discontent that came with it), the war on poverty (and such programs as Medicare, Head Start and the Job Corps), and the fight against racial discrimination through the passing of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. After filling in her research graphic, she then had to make an attractive poster to present, and she had to prepare an oral presentation for her class. Laura loved making her poster images on the computer and then trimming them with my scrapbooking tools. She also worked very hard practicing her presentation. Her work paid off in a great grade and praise from her teacher for doing her presentation without note cards, and even adding in a bit of trivia (that LBJ died young due to the stress the Vietnam War put on his heart). We are very proud of her work and so grateful for Mrs. Dianna Perdue for coming up with projects that allow these students to explore new and interesting topics!
