Spring Recital & Girl Time

Today, Laura had her spring dance recital.  The theme of the show was Motown.  Laura's class danced to "My Girl", complete with a live vocalist.  Her class did a lovely job.  Laura has worked very hard on her choreography this year.  She is very concentrated on stage and has very nice posture.  We are proud of the progress she has made.

Laura & her friend Amberly pass the time backstage watching a video on the iPad.
One thing we love about the Georgia College Community Dance Program is that the director (and Laura's teacher this year) does such a great job of picking age appropriate music, costumes and choreography.   We have seen so many dance studios perform over the years at various parades, sporting events, etc., and we've always been struck by the provocative clothes (i.e. bare midriff) and dance styles on young girls, along with the perpetuation of the "sassy girl" attitude.  We are so grateful to say that that has never been a problem at the GC program.  Our girls looked lovely and elegant onstage today; no need for those "sassy girl" poses and pouty faces! :)
Laura's lovely costume.  She wore this for the Nutcracker in December, and I think we were both excited to get it back out of the closet this weekend.
Another thing that is fun to watch at these recitals is the broad age range of the dancers.  Since this is truly a community dance program, there are dancers ranging from preschool to adult.  It is nice to watch the progression of skills from one class to the other.  We are very happy with our dance studio choice!!

Earlier this week, Laura and I got a chance to spend a couple of hours on our own while Cliff took Nathan to gymnastics.  She and I get precious little time just the two of us, so we really enjoy it when we get it.  We went to Walmart so Laura could buy a beading set she's been saving up for.  She was very excited and has already made several bracelets and keychains for herself, her friends and her teacher at school.

Laura thought it was cool that her name was on the box!

One shelf up was a craft kit with my name on it!
After Walmart, I treated Laura to Yummo Yogo, a local frozen yogurt chain that lets you select your own concoction of toppings and pay by the ounce.  Laura is always, how shall we say, very creative with her yogurt concoctions.
Watermelon frozen yogurt with 2 kinds of sprinkles, mini M&Ms and gummy worms.

Smile!!
Also this week, we had honors day at Laura's school.  We are very proud to say that Laura earned the following honors: Honor Roll all year, Principal's Award (awarded to students who demonstrated both outstanding behavior and academics all year), AR Award (for reaching her AR reading goal with at least an 80% average on all AR tests taken) and the Citizenship Award.  That last award was particularly cool because it was voted on by her classmates.  One boy and one girl from each classroom were elected for demonstrating positive citizenship throughout the year.  Way to go, Laura!

Go Laura! What a little smarty pants.
That is so nice that you have such a great dance studio. Those same things bug me. Laura looks beautiful in her costume.
