Welcome, Summer Break!

We are now one week into the kids' summer break, and we have transitioned to summer mode here.  Over Memorial Day weekend, we went up to NC to visit Cliff's parents and grandma.  Since Cliff was sick for most of our visit over the holidays, this was the first time for him to see his grandma since our visit last August.  As usual, the weather was fabulous.  It was about 20 degrees cooler there than here, so it was nice to be outside and not feel sticky and sweaty.  We enjoyed a short hike on Friday, that culminated with a beautiful waterfall.

Cliff, his mom and the kids hanging out behind the waterfall.
Cliff's dad took this picture right up by the waterfall.
Other highlights of the visit included the Garden Jubilee Festival downtown, a visit to Hands On, the local children's museum, Sunday brunch at Mean Mr. Mustard's Café, playing games together on the Wii, playing at Laurel Park and, of course, ice cream at Gop's.
Yum!!
Laura was very, very happy to go to Gop's.
On the way home, we stopped through Atlanta so Cliff could conduct the Atlanta Wind Symphony at the Roswell (Atlanta suburb) Memorial Day service.  The band sounded great, the service was very nice, and the kids and I enjoyed it relaxing on a blanket in the shade of big pine trees.

At home this week, we've enjoyed sleeping in (no more 6am alarm!!!).  Laura had her good friend Savannah over to spend the night last night.  It was a nice evening filled with Barbies, games, necklace/bracelet making, popcorn and movies.  This morning, we took Laura, Nathan & Savannah to the kick-off party for the Summer Reading Club at our local library.
Lots of kids came to watch the chemistry demonstrations.  Nathan was right up in front, and Laura & Savannah were right behind him.
Dr. Pohl (from Georgia College) showed the kids all kinds of chemistry demonstrations.  With that last name, I still can't help but wonder if he is related to me.......
After the library, we headed to the park for a picnic and play time with friends.
Laura, Violet, Megan and Iris have fun in the "girls' section" of the sand.
Meanwhile, Nathan had fun with his friends in the "boys' section" of the sand.
Ready to build a sand castle.
Nathan always has fun with his pal James.
Today we also picked up our pool passes for the summer, so we will be hitting the water very soon.  This weekend, we are looking forward to getting in some tent camping with friends before the major summer heat sets in.
